The Met Ball 2012 Review : Snazz Edition!

The Met (Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute gala) Ball is one of the biggest nights of the year for fashion and known as one of the most glamourous red carpets of the year.  The world of Films, Hollywood , Fashion and Art collided at this Gala affair. While most of them totally stole the spotlight in their gorgeous gowns, fashion-forward outfits and interesting get-ups, there were some ladies who left us let down

At the Met Gala for 2012, we saw metallic dresses, peplum and feathers, sexy backs, bright colours ,overly voluminous dresses to busy prints and of course plenty of Prada ascending the famous red staircase.

Lets have a look at the styles these well known faces hit at the Met Gala categorising them under best or worst dressed!

COLOR BLOCKING - Keeping up with the trend

At the Met Gala 2012 actors were spotted colour-blocking their outfits.

Doutzen Kroes, Amber Valletta, & Kristen Stewart

BEST
Doutzen Kroes - I personally loved the waved up hair. The retro wave was one of the biggest hair trends spotted on the red carpet at the MET Gala. Her dress on the other side was a safe play with minimal accessories

Kristen Stewart -  rocked in a fiercely leather outfit  adding a print section on the top to sober it down. She made a statement with her punk black & white shoes by Balenciaga. It was a bold choice for the actress.

WORST
Amber Valleta - The outfit wasn’t that appealing to me The part till her waist looked like a bodysuit not really patterned well. Looks like she could pull out the bottom white section and was ready for a dip in the pool.

FUZZY TALES

Lily Collins , Scarlett Johansson, Brit Marling, & Leighton Meester

BEST
Lily Collin - The 23 year old actress wore a Valentino dress with a statement clutch standing tall and pretty.

Brit Marling - A tie between Lily Collin and Brit Marling as both the outfits were Valentino. I love how Brit looked so fairy like, the subtle make-up with a section of her hair pinned back.

WORST
Scarlett Johansson - The net fuzzy portion started too early it should have been a little lower and she shouldn’t have chosen an off-shoulder dress If she wasn’t ready  to avoid the  clear straps which ruin the look pretty much.

Leighton Meester - The beautiful actress was seen in a tierd tulle gown but she missed the mark when it came to making a choice with the make-up. Looks like she just came from the tanning-bed.

ORANGE CRUSH

Kirsten Dunst , Ginnifer Goodwin,  & Kristen Bell

BEST
Kristen Bell - The Actress wore an orange crinkle silk chiffon gown with a crisscross halter neckline and waist rouching by Tommy Hilfiger. She finished off her look with Jimmy Choo shoes and a gold purse. She looked truely amazing.

Ginnifer Goodwin- The actress paired her pixie cut with a bold orange Monique Lhuillier gown.Starting with the beautiful outfit with the sheer neck cut-outs to the silver satin shoes to the minimal acceories evrything was just perfect. But to me she stole my heart previously at The Met Ball 2011.

WORST
Kirsten Dunst - Stayed true to her style and quirk, dressed ladylike inspired by the 40's style in a Rodarte ensemble. But to me it looked like a clashy and poorly tailored business suit making her looking skinny and not enhancing her figure.I asked my 12 year old niece how this lady looked and without any hesitation she said "A lady Santa Claus" .This is probably what a  65 year old would wear or rather what Olive Oyl would wear to the Met Ball.

DIP DYE

Beyonce, Kate Bosworth & Marion Cotillard

BEST
Marion Cotillard -  Love how the fabric is sheering towards the bottom. A neckpiece or ear-jewels would make it a ten on ten for this lady.

WORST
BeyonceThe thigh-revealing gown with mesh panel sheer with the feathered train  is not working for this talenlented singer, making her body look heavy and bulky and the bottom dye fluf looks like a rug. What was she thinking?

Kate Bosworth – Looks like she ran out of time to get an outfit for this Gala. An old-fashioned pick and her footwear and accessories are doing no good to draw away attention from her outfit.

PEPLUM

Solange Knowles, Eva Mendes, Elizabeth Banks, & Jessica Stam

BEST
Out of all these four ladies Solange Knowles 25-year-old singer and DJ, wearing a bright yellow strapless Rachel Roy gown and a silver and gold “Flavia” clutch by Edie Parker. The hot-pick with the Peplum.

WORST

While Eva Mendes' outfit looked like left over beads attached on the top otherwise it was a so-so thing. Elizabeth Banks was quite a dissapointment with too many competing prints on her outfit and the silhouette also did nothing for her fantastic figure. It was totally taking away from her beauty.

#TIP: Playing with prints is definately on trend but when you try to mix more than two prints you are in the danger zone.

METALLIC

Lana del Rey, Camilla Belle, Cameron Diaz, Anne V, Carey Mulligan & Gwyneth Paltrow

BEST

Calmilla Bele - Camilla's complexion is one of the most flawless in hollywood. Her outfit was classy and not very jazzy or shimmery. Her amazing glow was offset by a deep burgundy lipstick that popped against her skin — adding drama in a classy way! She looked nearly perfect!

Cameron Diaz - The Bad Teacher actress looked stunning in a custom-made Stella McCartney gown created from organic”the eco-dress”, certified silk adorned with thousands of glass beads and crystal chain as she attended the annual fashion event at the city's Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Carey Mulligan - This was an extra special night for her, one of her first red carpets after getting married. She had to stand out in her sparkly Prada outfit as she was co-hosting the gala!

WORST

Lana Del RayWith newly darkened hair and lips, Lana Del Rey looked reliably noir on the arm of designer Joseph Altuzarra . What was the cape doing there? Looked like she had come for Halloween Without that hideous piece and bright lips she would have been quite a stunner

Gwyneth Paltrow - Looking at what this lady wore or rather "dint wear" at this event as it was rather too skimpy for such a grand event .If you look at her side profile photos her side-boob was seen not enhancing her look at all! This outfit was'nt a good pick for this lady.

FLOWER POWER

Rashida Jones, Jessica Biel, Sarah Jessica Parker & M.I.A

BEST
Rashida Jones - Like always she looks pretty in that Tory Burch’s drop off-shoulder silk chiffon printed dress.

Jessica Biel – Was one of the last people to show up along with Justin timberlake ad Beyonce. She wore a lovely Prada dress BUT the bottom edging dint seem finished , looking undone. The outfit would have been a win if it ended a few inches higher or all the way down till her ankle.

Sarah Jessica Parker – I personally feel she looked fabulous and chic in the floral printed Valentino dress.

WORST
M.I.A - This Lady was one of those who let us down. M.I.A dint quite manage to pull-off her red carpet look. Her Stella McCartney, floral print suit taps into both the Spring floral and androgynous trends, but her hair overtook the look and made it look much more scruffy than I’m sure was intended. And the bold pink lip fashion did suit her outfit but did not suit her at all.

COLOURS

Dianna Agron, Emily Blunt, Emma Roberts, Emma Stone, Hilary Swank & January Jones

All of them looked stunning in  these bright colours keeping away from the stereotype black and white’s.
Love the different patterns cut-outs ,style, from the straight hair to the tied up hair-do to the retro waves which were a big hit on the red carpet. A definate ten on ten for these gorgeous ladies.

BLUES

Bee Shaffer, Candice Swanepoel, Heidi Klum & Lea Michele

BEST
Candice Swanepol & Lea Michele did 'DO THE BLUE' really well keeping the look simple yet very old hollywood. Way to go girls!

WORST
On the other hand, Bee Shaffer went too far with the overall printed gown making me feel like she got a curtain turned into a dress.

Heidi Klum may have left the runways from the victoria secret shows but her need to reveal seems to be one that needs to go. The NOT-SO-CLASSY ensemble with the lace on top was a big NO-NO. Definitely something that should be stacked away in the cupboard and never see the light of day.

BLACK BEAUTY’S

Renée Zellweger, Rihanna, Mary-Kate Olsen & Nina Dobrev

BEST
Renee Zellweger - In Emilio Pucci sheer cut out dress which was breath-taking with the perfect amount of accessories.

Rihanna - Embossed beauty  beauty wore a crocodile embossed dress, she made sure to show off her toned rear in the slinky Tom Ford number While she kept her make-up and jewellery to a minimum, her hairdo at the Costume Institute Gala was over the top.

Nina Dobrev – Vampire Diaries Nina Dobrev looked radiant in a gold and black one-shouldered Donna Karan Atelier gown, complete with a dramatic train. Nude lips with dark eyes  is a perfect choice for this outfit. Good pick Nina Dobrev ,you looked gorgeous!

WORST
Mary-Kate Olsen - Clad in an entirely black dress with nothing going on was quite a dull serious look for this grand event. The goth look was not doing any good for her. Quite a disappointment she being a fashion designer.

GOLD

Jessica Alba, Kate Upton, Jessica Pare & Karolina Kurkova

While gold according to me is one of the classiest colors 4 women did gold all wrong.

Jessica Alba's crushed off shoulder pick that was one i could bear to look at. On the other hand Kate Upton's ill fitted circus outfit, Jessica Pare's sweetheart necked almost snake skin like gown or Karolina Kurkova's red carpet scuba diving gear all were bad examples of what and how ones judgment is clouded while picking an outfit, especially in gold.

MY PERSONAL FAVORITE

Marc Jacobs wins the prize for the 'Most controversial outfit' in sheer lace dress and white boxers at Met Gala:

Marc Jacobs, the skirt-lover and occasional dress-wearer, forewent pants at Met Gala this year.Instead, the designer wore a see-through black lace shirt-dress over glaringly white boxers, paired with pilgrim-buckle shoes from his most recent collection.

He said: 'I just didn't want to wear a tuxedo and be boring.' Way to go Marc Jacobs! I think not everyone can carry this off with so much confidence.
